How does Rachmaninoff do it? How does he compose music that touches your heart? In this video, pianist Duane Hulbert gives three plus ways that Rachmaninoff created mood in his beautiful Prelude in E flat Major Op. 23, No. 6, written in 1903.

#1. Rachmaninoff creates a running accompaniment line. (:59)

#2. He varies the length of the phrases. (1:53)

#3. He uses tension and relaxation. (3:37)

Bonus: To end the piece, he repeats the opening phrase, adding new harmonies underneath. (5:31)

By far, my favourite prelude from his op23 and op32! It would be of great interest to see what fingering you're using in the L. H. acompaniment. That's actually what took me the most time to figure out as i was learning this piece.
