They were each other's "person" during the earlier seasons. When Ben came that is when he became Bailey's "person" and Derek finally fixed things with Mark so Mark became his "person".
Its just like how Cristina was Grey's "person" but Alex had to be that one when Cristina left and now Grey pretty much have Amelia and Maggie
