I'd really recommend reading Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher books. In a world full with actual monsters, people still turn out to be the biggest assholes

If you're looking for more high fantasy recs specifically, Memory Sorrow and Thorn by Tad Williams is a classic fantasy series that was hugely inspirational on GRRM and A Game of Thrones, as well as being a great series on its own right, with a less dark tone tho it still is definitely "serious" fantasy.

Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy (Crystal Cave, Hollow Hills, and Last Enchantment), plus the companion novel The Wicked Day, are also great Arthurian books.

Yes! Robin Hobb was the only one I could think of to recommend, simply because I don't know of many that are like A Song of Ice and Fire. Maybe the Mabinogion. The Dragonlance Saga has knights in it as well (and dragons, obviously), but it doesn't especially remind me of A Game of Thrones. Many thanks for the recommendations.

Conn Iggulden has books on Caesar, Genghis Khan and Wars of the Roses too if you’re looking for some asoiaf themes

The Dragon

Traders Liveship is great! It’s my favourite and it’s the prequel.

Normally I'd say roman history > greek history but Cercei reminds me more of Olympias(Alexander the Great's mother) then Agrippina

I’ve heard good things about just about anything Brandon Sanderson. Mark Lawrence is said to be good too as is Bernard Cornwell.

Awesome choices. 2 others that I would say are specifically Shakespeare's histories revolving around the Wars of the Roses and just any history non fiction or historical fiction about the Wars of the Roses since Martin says that was his first inspiration for the story 😀. I still need to finish ASOIAF though, after I catch up on the show I want to re-read book one and then read then others for the first time (shameful that it has taken me so long to continue on with the series). I do own the first Robin Hobb book though so that is on my list to start as soon as I finish these 😀

I'd suggest Maurice Druon series of books, which had influence on Martin. The best description I can give is imagine a mix of Three Musketeers with Game of Thrones. The books follow two royal families in France from Philip IV starting from templars cursing royal family for 12 generations. Great fun :-)

Love these recommendations! I definitely would love to read the Confessions of Young Nero and the Emperor of the Eight Islands (and actually currently reading Dragon Keeper!) Also, I had no idea that Steinbeck wrote a King Arthur novel. Must be interesting!

Check out the new fantasy novel Kandor The Warrior by Leo. Great plot and absorbing story. Twists and turns and good characters. I could not put it down!

The Dragon Keeper's description reminds me of Lady Ramkin's "Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons" :D
Best Arthurian work imho is Tolkien's "Fall of Arthur", though.

Was surprised there was nothing relating to the War of the Roses (as it was a huge influence on the the Lannister vs Stark conflict).
As for recommendations; my main reason for appreciating aSoIaF would be (most of) the character writing and most of the magic in it annoys me. Do you have any recommendations considering that?

HOW HAS NO ONE MENTIONED NAME OF THE WIND BY PATRICK ROTHFUSS? 😱😑
Easily one of the greatest books I've ever read ...
