River Journeys with Conrad Humphreys - River Dart

International yachtsman Conrad Humphreys explores the rivers of Devon and Salcombe estuary in his one-of-a-kind lugger, Bounty’s End. He meets up with a myriad of interesting people along the way to talk about history of the rivers and the sailing boats that have shaped the local area.

"Sailing a traditional boat on these rivers has really helped me to understand just how much our waterways have shaped our history. It’s all too easy to think about the big round the world exploratory voyages that Captain James Cook and Robert Fitzroy undertook, but around the UK every river, estuary and harbour has made its own unique contribution to our prosperity, our way of life and our understanding of the world."

Episode 2: River Dart
Conrad travels up the River Dart, past Dartmouth Castle and toward the famous Britannia Royal Naval College and then on up to Totnes. Along the way he learns about some of the people and ships that have shaped the Dart's history.

Great video. I love the Dart, it's one of my favourite places in the world.

Dittisham is pronounced 'Ditsum' by the way...

Sitting here at 3, 400m in Cusco Peru, they are bring back such great memories of all my sailing round the South West.

Going into Dartmouth was a memorable highlight of taking my RYA competent crew ticket, on Golden Vanity of the Trinity Sailing Foundation. Just one of the historic vessels out of Brixham that do good work.

Oh, i did enjoy this! I used to live in Totnes, and knew this area very well. I took frequent walks downriver, to Sharpham and beyond. It's a beautiful place, and your film has brought me some happy memories. Thank you!

Hi Conrad, this series is really nicely filmed, good mix of sailing and history. As child I explored many of these river systems on summer holidays. Im wondering about the history of your boat. Is this a replica of the boat Bligh used on his epic journey? Did you build it yourself? Finally are you planning on going as far as the Fal Estuary which is where I did a lot of sailing as a teenager on holiday.

I think you said it took "thousands of years" to form the Harbour from a creek up in hills...but it's really "millions" of years.?

We all love "ancient history"..I.e 1066 ..1770...1824...but the forming of earthy topography like carving a waterfall by water....or uplifting Mt Everest ...is more like "billions" of years!!! So that is at least 1000 × 1000 x 1000 years ? But who listened to their geography teacher anyway?
