In this November 14-15 Naval Battle of Guadalcanal a hero arose on the USS South Dakota. I mentioned him once before on one of Elinor's other broadcast be he deserves a second mention. His name was Calvin Graham, who served on the S. Dakota as part of an anti-aircraft crew. He was seriously wounded but still participated in the rescue of his fellow shipmates. For his actions he earned the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star with a V for valor. Calvin Graham was born April 3, 1930, making him 12 years old at the time of the battle. He went on to serve in the Marines during the Korean War.

I always enjoy your vids not only for the informative content but for the clear concise narrative. Its refreshing not to hear a lousy AI narrative.

Guadalcanal turned out to be such a bare knuckle brawl, in the dark even. It was such an educational experience for the US in how to/how not to wage a campaign for an island.

Thanks, Eleanor. My favorite naval engagement. Admiral Lee is movie worthy.

I'm always so pleased when you post one of my favorite ships Lady Elinorison.

Out of the Kongos Kirishima definitely earned her keep. Giving a good account of herself during her fight with South Dakota and Washington, despite being out matched.

Job well done, looking forward to whatever other surprises you have in store for us!

Love your voice and delivery. You are either a natural, or well trained speaker. First rate.

Kirishima really didn’t have a chance. She was outmatched by the USN heavies and had the misfortune of running afoul of Admiral Willis Lee. There has likely never been, nor ever will be, a better trained or more talented student of Naval Gunnery than Lee. Of course, 16” rifles at point blank range would make any gunnery officer drool with delight.

The IJN brought the Nagato class battleships into service in the very early 1920s - Nagato and Mutsu - in addition to the Kongo, Fuso, and Ise classes.

Great video, I just received a present of a 1&1200 scale Kirishima, so I was pleased to see and hear all about it.

Again, great video. Yes, the KONGO class ships were the most useful of the heavy gunned capital ships of the IJN during the war, largely due to their speed. Along with being able to keep up with the carriers of Kido Butai their fuel economy in the early war fleet actions allowed them to act as tankers for the shorter ranged ships, such as the destroyers.

In the Second Naval Battle of Guadalcanal Vice Admiral Kondo aboard heavy cruiser ATAGO initially failed to recognize that he was facing battleships instead of cruisers, and this was costly. While the Japanese did spot the U.S. forces by eye in the night at about the same time that the U.S. fleet detected them by radar, the mayhem of the gunfire action by KIRISHIMA and the other Japanese ships against SOUTH DAKOTA enabled WASHINGTON to identify friend from foe and close undetected to point blank range to open fire on KIRISHIMA.

I've always had a soft spot for the Kongō class, very beautiful and sleek ships and I'm looking forward to watching the videos you made about the other sisters.

Great video, subbed

enjoyed this and pleased to note the updating of the damage done by the 16'' inch guns from earlier sources. in total agreement with the other comments on your narrative skills. best to you and onward and upward, if you will

Part of the ship that sunk Kirishima(USS Washington) is on the USS North Carolina in Wilmington. It's a tag on an electrical panel(or it may be the whole panel) in an upper 5 inch handling room. Washington should not have been scrapped IMHO

Old George would've been proud. My respects to our fighting sailors.

The sinking of the Kirishima had unintentional but terrible consequences for the citizens of the city of Manila. Kirishima's captain, Sanji Iwabuchi, survived the sinking, and later on was assigned to head the Special Naval Landing Force unit in Manila. When US and Filipino forces were closing in on Manila, he and his men stayed behind instead of joining Tomoyuki Yamashita's forces to retreat toward the Cordillera Mountains in Northern Luzon. Iwabuchi led his men to commit the atrocities that constitute what is now known as the Manila Massacre.

Great video, thanks for posting!
I'm familiar with the subject of next week's video; in all honesty I have trouble wrapping my head around some of what happened. Can't wait!
