Pokémon Vending Cards: Series 2 (Red)

Back in 1998, there were sets of Pokémon cards released in Japan that were sold on sheets in vending machines: Blue, Red, & Green. I'm going to be looking at every single one of these cards one set at a time starting with the Blue Series. Most of these cards all appear in Pokemon Trading Card Game 2, also a Japan-only release. This is Series 2: Red.

Intro, Background, Pallet Town Remix by Joshua C. Griffin.

Note on Magneton’s Microwave attack: microwave ovens, as in the appliance, function primarily through the use of a component called a - wait for it - magnetron.

Fun fact on the Master Ball: apparently Pokémon agrees with you as they changed the effect of Master Ball in the Black and White TCG series to search for any Pokémon, but it was classified as an ACE SPEC card, which you could only include one of in your deck.

The effect of Master Ball from back in the day is the current effect of Great Ball.

That Vending Voltorb does in fact count for itself and it's actually kinda scary if it gets set up.

It's also the card that got me wondering "what the heck was wrong with the pixelart" when I played TCG2 recently. Finding out about Vending Cards through this series clears up a lot. Gameplay-wise, many of these were absolute highlights for me, even if the artstyle isn't always my cup of tea.

20:04 Hitmonchan is NOT kicking a puncing bag. He stepped on a hotdog and is trying to shake it off of his shoe.

Very excited for this one. These cards are so cool. I remember convincing my dad to order me some of these off Ebay when I was a kid after seeing them in a book about collecting Pokémon cards. I still have the book and the cards!

I like that the vending series cards feature the Pokémon in Kanto, not just abstract backgrounds and random locations (although Jungle Weepinbell with a real-life bird on its head is iconic).

Great series! I have so much nostalgia for these cards and wish we had got them in the US. And Congrats on 10k!

I never understood why Onix wasn't stronger than he actually was. It's a massive snake made of pure rocks. This thing should have an attack stat that reflects this. Its weaknesses are fine, but I always felt like this stats, particularly his attack, didn't reflect his actual look. He looks like he should pack a serious punch, but he just... doesn't. Never made any sense to me.

According to someone on Reddit, the artist of that Hitmonlee card did an interview where they said that the thing it's stepping on is supposed to be a Fearow.
Personally, I suspect that it probably wasn't supposed to be any specific Pokemon, since this was back when normal animals would sometimes appear on cards.

I've always thought that cards like Jynx should apply weakness/resistance based on the types of its attack, not its own type. But doing it this way does give monotype decks more tools, so it probably works out better.

That Omanyte looks like it has some very heavy eyeliner/eyeshadow to me, like it's a teenager going through an emo/goth phase. And that's just too silly not to love.

Pretty darn sure that the Voltorb itself does count as a Voltorb in play for the attack, otherwise it would say "other Voltorb". So if you're using Game Boy Ditto to get more Voltorbs and your opponent does the same, you could theoretically do 140 damage with that attack (which would have to be to another Voltorb, of course, haha)

Congrats on 10k! I love that Dewgong card. The coloring of the sunset (or sunrise?) is beautiful. Also that Shellder card is hilarious. It looks like it just Surfed right on up next to you and gave you a sassy wink. It's just oozing with character;

I've grown to really love this channel. I like the vibe man real chill. I like the nostalgia road and overall I like learning how to play the TCG!

Congrats on 10k! With a series as unique as this, you deserve that many and more. Also, that Hitmonchan card is way more reminiscent of the 50hp Machop with Low Kick than the powerhouse that was the original Hitmonchan. Quite disappointing imo. Looking forward to the next episodes!

Congrats on 10k! I love these videos cause I get to see all these cards that I never knew about. I've collected my fair share of cards but never really played the game

I actually really like the Dewgong art. He looks so happy just gazing at the hazy sky.

congrats on 10k and happy to hear there's more GB2 content on the way. Also, can confirm that vending Voltorb counts itself/the active Voltorb while attacking
