Designing The Entrance To Your Home: Don't Overdo It

My advice is to avoid putting tall things along paths, driveways and along a low landing or porch like this because it can be a bit much. When you are turning a corner it’s nice to be able to see what’s ahead.

Other perennial shade plants to consider (perennials come back every year): wild ginger, columbine, coral bells, maidenhair ferns. The bleeding heart I was suggesting is called fringed or wild (Dicentra excimia). Options for solomon seal include false and smooth. All of these are native to much of the US in case you’re interested in incorporating native plants. (Astilbe, hosta and hellebores are not but lungwort is.) Bulbs could include daffodils, hyacinth and allium, all of which are usually not interesting to bunnies and deer but it’s no guarantee!

As always, feel free to share your favorite shade perennials!
