Today I am taking at the recently released Wonderboy Anniversary Collection offered on PS4/PS5, and Switch. This collection offers 21 versions of 6 different games spanning console, handheld, and arcade. Does it deliver?

Man the master system soundtrack is so good. FM sound is cool and all, but nothing takes me back like the Master System soundchip.

So many great memories of this series! Monster land/world is what I would consider my first RPG! I loved it sooo much as a kid! The master system was the best!!

Fun fact: a MUCH smaller collection developed by M2 is also available on XBox, albeit through 360 backwards compatibility. Sega Vintage Collection: Monster World has: Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Arcade), Wonder Boy in Monster World (Genesis), and Monster World IV (Genesis). $9.99 and works on everything from 360 up to Series. It's odd this Anniversary collection didn't hit X Box, but there's a cheap option out there for anyone interested in trying out the franchise.

I remember the first one in the amusements in the 80s that's showing my age..I had the dragons trap on the console...I enjoyed that one.

Thank you for spotlighting this collection right away. I have been enjoying all of the love that this series has been getting in recent years with remasters of Dragons Trap and MWIV, the remake of the first game, an actual sequel, inclusions on the Genesis Mini, and now a reasonably thorough collection.

I highly recommend that fans of the sister series Adventure Island and fans of the Shantae series check out the Wonder Boy/Monster World series if they haven’t done so yet.

I have fond memories playing the first two games on the Master system growing up. Having a sequel take such a drastic change in direction blew my eight year old mind.

The news of this release makes me hope that Konami will release an Adventure Island collection with translated versions of AI 4 and Super AI 2 in the near future.

Good thing I waited for this collection - as soon as I heard about this originally back when the first version came out, I just waited until now.

I received mine via post to the UK, it was almost a year from order to delivery.

Aiming to 100% every game. Love seeing the returning levels, enemies, and music across the entries in the series. I played Monster Land to death on my Master System, though was oblivious to how using my Mega Drive pad in the system made the game unplayable and returning to Woolworths twice thinking the game was broken.

I would have liked a little more content from behind the scenes, otherwise, exactly what I hoped for.

I'm glad this collection at least exists for people to enjoy in some form. It's more extensive than I expected. I first became familiar with these game on the Turbografx and it's a shame those versions aren't included but it's probably a licensing issue as it is with the home computer verseons.

Just to mention, the Playasia version (Wonder Boy Ultimate Collection or Ultimate Wonder Boy Collection) will only have 13 of the 21 versions of the game, basically omitting all the western ports entirely leaving only the Japanese versions in tact, so do keep that in mind

Great review. I'll always hope for the PAL slower speed and aspect ratio, the one thing always absent in all these collections.... European nostalgia and all.
But, looks great! I've really got into the series recently playing on MiSTer, only played the first on SMS back in the day. Delighted to hear the Play Asia physical version is available for Switch.

I just wish this developer put some care and attention into the UI. It's so utilitarian but to the point that it feels like a Raspberry Pi or something. It's a shame they couldn't wrap the whole thing up to make it exciting and interesting to go through... saying that I appreciate the options and features on offer, just not how they're presented.
