I'm not a software engineer, but when I first joined my company, the onboarding was very much "watch a video" or "put in a call with this person" and then they would just talk at me for an hour, without me actually understanding any of it. I made it about 3 days before going to my manager and saying "I can't do this, please give me something to do" and she did. I ended up learning way more and connecting with people better as well! I know I'm pretty lucky to have a great manager and that's not the case for everyone, but if you feel like you would learn better and contribute more in a different way, make sure you communicate it! ❤😻
