Zoom became popular because it was the easiest and more "normie friendly" software available last year (and because you could put cool backgrounds easily). Google and Microsoft were not offering free calls with large numbers of people, which they immediately did after they saw Zoom was booming. Some schools also used Zoom as their mandatory software. Fortunately some more tech savy teacher saw the problems with Zoom and they advised the schools to change (at least in my country). I hope the software is patched now cause I was forced to use it.
