The restaurant was created by the renowned chef and restaurateur, Ryan Ratino; and has been notably recognized as a one star Michelin dining experience for four years in a row, starting in 2019.

Bresca is located in the U Street Corridor neighborhood of Washington DC, on 14th street between T and U street, close to the corner of T street. While it is squashed between two other restaurants, Lupo Pizzeria and Lupo Verde, it pops out with its deep blue and white facade with yellow trim. There is limited street parking, so we recommend reserving a parking spot using SpotHero if you want to be guaranteed parking somewhat close.

The playful blue, white and yellow color pallet continues to the interior of the restaurant. While small (roughly 60 seats), Bresca is bright and contemporary with high ceilings, a clean layout, and simple seating. With this design, Ratino successfully creates a relaxing, enjoyable atmosphere where diners can have great food and service without feeling like it needs to be a special occasion. That being said, due to the small footprint, the restaurant can get quite noisy when it is busy.

Similar to the “bistronomy” menu items mixing a bistro vibe with gastronomy, Bresca’s interior design is a mix of different European accents, inspired by Ratino’s trips to Iceland and references include a living moss wall, fish sculptures, and animal prints. Finally, Bresca means “honeycomb” in Catalan and the hexagonal shape adorns a number of features throughout the restaurant as a whimsical nod to this reference.

Bresca has always been forward-thinking in the quality of both its food and commitment to sustainability. Not only does Bresca focus on bringing the best and most responsibly sourced ingredients to the table, it was also the first DC restaurant to join the Zero Food Print Initiative. As such, it is not surprising that Bresca’s menu changes with seasonal items that are integrated into sophisticated, contemporary Parisian bistro-type dishes that look like works of art. Dishes can also be paired with a selection of over 100 wines. The wine program earned Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence for the first time in 2022.

But that is enough about the restaurant, onto the meal itself!

We had the tasting menu adding in the Kaluga Caviar as well as the optional Bresca Duck which we heard was the restaurant’s specialty.

As soon as we sat down, we were given a small glass of honey kombucha as an aperitif. There were a lot of staff for a small restaurant and the service was immaculate.

The courses we had were:

Compte Tart: Beef Tartar - Charcoal and

Lobster “Choux”: Bergamot - Dill
