Best visual explanation of precession. I was starting to think no one really understood what it was. Sometimes it can be very hard to get a straight scientific answer.

I've been trying to visualize this for months!! THANK YOU! SOOO HELPFUL

WOW! you're AWESOME!! 8 years after putting this up and you still got us covered.
short, to the point and perfectly worded/illustrated. Thank YOU! May 2021 awaken more people as the celestial systems above us are sending much more powerful energies down upon us. Smile lovely people, you're not alone! All is one and one is all 🌍💚 with love from Earth.

Thank you for this video!! I am studying an astronomy course and was super confused about how precession works. Your video demonstration of the stars map with the gyroscope was really really helpful!!!

But the Earth precesses in the opposite direction to your demonstration...

Now finally I can say that i know what precession is and this is just because of uh..! Thnx a lot buddy.... Love from India🇮🇳

If you used a string to spin the axis you could avoid the appearance that the wobble had been caused by the awkward finger twiddling.

This is probably a dumb question, but the Earth doesn't have a counter-weight to cause precession, as in your model. How do you assume then that the Earth achieves precession, given there is no counter-weight? Shouldn't a model be accurate?

Allow me to also join in on the congratulations you deserve in this well done video and explanation. My question is why is it that the planet's axis is neatly precessing around a point that would otherwise be oriented perfectly North/South to the sun. Since nothing is ever perfect (seemingly) I would have guessed that precession would have been oriented around a "precessional axis" (making words up here as I don't have the proper knowledge) that is itself at some imperfect angle. Hope this question makes sense. Thank you very much.

This is by far the best explanation of procession I've seen yet.

This is by far the best explanation about it I've ever seen. Crystal clear, thank you so much!!

Amazing visuals as well as explanatory methods

If the axis of rotation would move in a 23 degree angle around the earth like in this experiment than the backward circle it would draw in the sky would be huge!! Way bigger then that group of polar stars

Are we missing something here?

Is the earth remains tilted towards the sun or in the opposite position, then how the weather changes.

Best explanation I’ve ever seen. Bravo 👏🏼

Great demonstration. The end of the rod writes small circles. Is that nutation?

Great video, really helped me to visualise what it is I have just read. Couldn't see it all whilst reading, now seems kind of obvious. Thank you.

What is the difference between nutation and precession?

Do the seasons move in lockstep along with the precession of the North Pole ? In otherwords, would the Winter position of the earth in orbit around the sun be opposite of what it was 13, 000 earlier - Summer ? I’m confused on this point. Otherwise a very useful video.

Interesting that there is a slight wobble as it precesses - would this correspond to a small periodic variation in the obliquity of the Earth from 23.5 degrees to slightly smaller or greater angles over the course of 26, 000 years i.e. is the obliquity of the earth always 23.5 degrees?
