The Flammpanzer I was an improvised German self-propelled flame thrower based on the chassis of the light tank PzKpfw I Ausf. A. This vehicle was created by the soldiers of the 5th Light Division, which was part of the Afrika Korps. The modification involved replacing one of the two standard MG 13 machine guns with a Flammenwerfer 40 flame thrower. The Flammenwerfer 40, originally a portable infantry backpack flame thrower, was mounted on the tank to support infantry in destroying fortified enemy positions. The flame thrower had a limited range of about 25 meters, with fuel stored in tanks mounted at the rear of the vehicle, which increased the risk of explosion if hit.
