On the album, this song is divided into three parts: 1) Whiskey Boot Hill 2) Down Down Down and 3) Country Girl. If I remember correctly, Neil merged three of his unfinished songs into this suite. Demos for at least the middle part were worked on with Neil's previous band Buffalo Springfield. Other Neil fans, please feel free to make corrections or fill in gaps.

This really shows their range and love how the melody builds to the final chorus.
Neill Young vocals started tune. That's just his voice that many can't handle but fit beautifully with the band and Buffalo Springfield.

Welcome to my high school years! CSNY were one of the best bands! I remember rushing out to buy this album! My dad had to drive me since I didn't drive yet...I was all of 14! lol. I so love the ending of this song!

Probably my favorite CSN&Y song, when combined with 4&20

Thanks for this one, JMBOY. For someone who was thrown off by the beat. you seemed to be head-bobbing pretty well to it. I've never heard anything from these dudes that I didn't like. Collectively or individually, they are amazing examples of writers, composers, and artists. Their musicianship is off the charts.

Sonically powerful track. Great album, great band, 4 great artists individually, synergistic together.

Neil wrote several epic, grand compositions like this one, especially in Buffalo Springfield and early in his solo career and in CSNY (CSNY overlapped the era of his early solo releases). CSN and CSNY literally have the DNA of Buffalo Springfield, with Stills and Young both being alumni. This piece reminds me a bit of Neil's Buffalo Springfield songs Expecting To Fly, and Broken Arrow. Two more of his great epics are Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand, both from his second solo album in 1969.

Always was, and still is my favorite.

I really love the way the vocals are layered:
- first chorus is Neil alone, with Crosby and Nash joining for the chorus;
- second is Neil and Crosby, with Nash returning for the chorus (and this ends "Whiskey Boot Hill");
- third (start of the "Down, Down, Down" segment) is Neil and Stills, with all four in for the two ending phrases (before the "Country Girl" segment/climax).

If someone knows otherwise, please chime in.

I love this song. So full and rich with sound. I bought this album way back when just from the cover photo alone and every song is fire. this one is a standout.

That's just how it was all through the 70's. Just like that.

I think everyone of my friends, myself, my brothers had this album.

one of my fave Neil tunes! Love how it builds to the climax at the end, with the timpanis and then the organ and harmonica "got to make you understand...let me be your country man"

Neil Young's contribution to the album is the best one.

Great choice! Another banger from Neil Young. This song is also unique because the chorus comes at the end of the song, not unlike David Crosby’s “In My Dreams” from the CSN album 🔥

Iconic Album full of epic songs. My original copy is on the wall in my music room... above it an add for the album from Rolling Stone Mag on a decoupage burnt board.

Not a favourite song it didn’t really flow, maybe they were arguing at the time lol I prefer Neil Young’s voice on his album Harvest. No idea what the song was about 😊
