The Untold Story of Indonesia's Finger-Cutting Ritual
You might be surprised to learn about a unique tradition practiced by the Dani, an indigenous tribe in Indonesia. When a family member dies, a woman in the family has the upper part of one of her fingers cut off. This ritual, known as Ikipalin, is believed to bring peace to the souls of their ancestors. Typically, a stone blade is used to amputate the upper part of the finger. However, in some cases, the finger is tightly bound with a rope to cut off blood circulation until it falls off naturally. The severed finger is then burned. Although the Indonesian government banned this practice several years ago, the fingers of many elderly women suggest that the tradition is still observed to this day.
