What's the BEST Phone for Teens? | Gabb vs Troomi

I'm going to futher add in my mom advice.
Do NOT get your children phones until they are driving and then the stripped down models ( ie, calls, texting, camera) should be the only 'phone' they need. Personal experience has taught me that I would NEVER EVER buy another phone for a child less than 16 for ANY reason. They are a nightmare.

After trying the Gabb Phone 4 for my child, I can confidently say it’s not worth it. The phone was unreliable, and the parental controls were frustrating to manage. While I was able to cancel my service without fees, I wouldn’t recommend Gabb to anyone. A much better alternative is an iPhone with its built-in parental controls—it’s far easier to use and actually works.

I've been trying to research as much as I can. My oldest will be 12 in 2 weeks and we want to surprise her with a phone. I think Troomi for the win! I am so nervous to get her a phone, but its time.

Does the Troomi phone require you to download an 'app' onto the kids phone? I find this is a self defeating feature since most kids are amazingly smart in deleting apps that they don't want their parents to see.
Is the parent portal like a "Bark' system ( also a nightmare to use) or is it NOT dependent on the device being close by in order to pick up and detect phone features?

Does troomi automatically add new apps to the phone which the parent then needs to restrict, or does it add it to a database where the parent can then release it to the phone?
