Network Tour YouTube Description

By popular demand! Today is the day that I give you a tour of my home network and specifically how I solved all my slow and buggy WiFi issues. I've been building out my new network since February 2023 and I'm finally done (at least for now). I standardized on Unifi from Ubiquiti networking equipment.

Here are the links to gear that I covered (some are affiliate links that help support the channel, but don’t cost you any extra):

Network Closet
Door Fans

Master Bedroom

Terry’s Office

Live Streaming Studio

WiFi - Unifi Access Points

Unifi Protect Cameras

"It's plugged in if it has an ethernet port". Best philosophy ever, I totally second it

This is truly an excellent video and I thank you for posting it. About 7 years ago I got into unifi out of pure necessity. An infested neighborhood at the time with break ins and gunshots being fired at night regularly down the street. I needed security for my family, did my research and thought Ubiquiti is the way since it had similarities to Apple products. I wanted the best unifi had to offer and decided to get a lot of the commercial grade gears. I got the unifi XG - 8 enterprise router, a 24 port switch with 500 watts. 14 cameras including a UVC pro that’s still kicking. Four uap - ac - shd access points for Wi-Fi . From time to time, xfinity would interrupt the internet otherwise no problems . I have a new addition to the house and looking to extend the experience. For those thinking about investing into Unifi gears, I can tell you it’s a worry free system after all these years. Setting things up wasn’t that easy for me, but YouTube videos helped tremendously. Your set up is an inspiration sir.

I love this video, Terry! Also yes, UniFi is 100% a drug. When I finished setting up our house I convinced my parents that they too could benefit from a simple UniFi setup just so I could do it all over again. 😂

Couldn’t agree with you more on the comment of “….unifi is the drug…”, I started rebuilding my home infrastructure with about $2k budgeted, and ended up with $8k spending 😂😂😂 But very happy with the results!

Awesome video, I just started my journey with the UDM SE, 24 port switch, U7 pro and G4 pro doorbell. Love it all so far.

First time watching your content. Great job, love the set up, I’m new to unifi and also quickly falling down the rabbit hole

Unifi is definitely a drug! I started with the UDM SE and a U6-LR AP and now all my network devices are Ubiquiti.

Crazy setup. Great explanation. I am in process of constructing our house. Planning is a key and I do relate to your comment what can be hard wired should be. I am going with Loxone for automation, UniFi for networking and security cameras, and local established brand for home security.

This deep dive was really insightful! Thanks for the links to your gear too. Definitely more than I need though. 😁

I have way too much invested in UniFi. 😂 But I don’t regret it as it just works. 4 APs, 15 cameras, 2 24 port switches, 30+ drops of CAT 6a, Aggregation switch, NVR of course, built my own NAS but now want the UniFi NAS. 😂 someone stop me. 😂

Ubiquiti which I consider the Apple of Networking, has made home networking really fun. Very impressed with your home setup sir.

Terry, great set up and thanks for sharing. Agree that UniFi is a drug, I have a home UniFi installation as well and agree it'r rock solid. If yo don’t mind, I have two questions: 1. With the AppleTV in your server rack as your primary Apple Home hub, how do you access the user interface to update it, etc? I noticed three cables coming from it and I assume they’re are power, ethernet and HDMI, but where’s the TV / monitor. 2. At 18:36 you show your Mac Studio and primary monitor, what is the primary monitor, looks like a 32 inch one. Thanks again for sharing and all the content you’ve provided over the years. I started following you for your Photoshop education a while back. Cheers and Happy Holidays!

Listening to how you got started with UniFi sounds very familiar. As well as being on the site everyday and buying more an more gear.

Very Nice home network, no such thing as overkill in your home. I am on my way building an over the top home network not with Unifi. Thanks for sharing your setup.

Fantastic setup! Terry, you need to snag some of the new UniFi AI Ports for your Doorbell and other non-AI UniFi cameras. (Or buy some ONVIF non-UniFi gear). Sold out right now, but keep an eye on inventory. Most people don't realize you can pair ANY UniFi or ONVIF camera to the AI Port. You are not limited to PoE cameras - so should work great even with the G4i. (The PoE daisy-chain port on the AI Port device is simply a convenience for wiring to avoid needing extra PoE ports on switches).

And they are promising future upgrades will support multiple cameras with a single AI Port device!

I beg to differ on one thing - UniFi cameras are not all that great. They still lack anything with color night vision sensors. As a photographer, I'm surprised you aren't sensitive to the amazing difference a $100 non-UniFi camera with a starlight color night sensor provides. Now with Protect's support for ONVIF cameras and the AI Port, time to get a second drug dealer! (translation: Start playing with some of the non-UniFi cameras - many awesome ones to choose from).

I'm burying the lead: What happened to your weekly Photoshop livestreams? I am missing my fix! Have learned so much but still so much to learn. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place, but seems like both you are Jason Levine are no longer doing weekly lives?
