Totally agree with this opinion, as a YouTuber myself I was first saddened to realize that positive comments were so common they had no more positive effects on me, and haters / troll comments started to appear. All new and unseen, they really hurt me at first, and I tried several things (as a good scientist would :P):

- Responding violently: consolidated their thoughts and hate on me -> vicious circle.
- Asking for reasons / justifications: proved that MOST of the haters/trolls have no idea of what your work is about, and thus can't respect it -> their opinion is totally not relevant and does not express truth about you.
- Ignoring: other people would tend to start a conflict and enter the vicious circle -> delete / keep letting go. Their opinion does NOT reflect the reality of things and you should really take them like that.
Justified criticism needs to be listened to, your viewers have a different point of view from yours and maybe expect something different, always question yourself, that's humility :)

When I make a purely scientific video: people call it boring.
When I make a fun video: people call it stupid.
When I try to mix both: most people are pleased, but still guys arguing that they would like it to be more scientific, or more entertaining.

In short terms:
Remember that for each person that hates you, 1000 more love you.
You will never please and agree with everybody, do what you love for whoever loves what you do.
You're not doing it for the haters, they're not to be given importance to ;)

It's because of videos like these that Derek is by far my favorite producer of educational content on Youtube. I don't know many other scientific communicator youtubers that produce content of such a high standard, but are still not afraid to voice their own opinions, regardless of whether or not they is contentious. Keep up the good work Derek, I'm sure it won't be long before the climate change deniers start giving in.
