Octopus Hunts with Grouper Posse

This octopus enjoyed a leisurely morning hunt and was not at all disturbed by our presence...or that of the accompanying groupers! This clip was shot in Bonaire during a dawn dive in November 2012.

The best thing about this video is that it starts with just what it says.No irritating music and no subscribe me message.

They weren't hu ting with it. They wanted to snatch off the tips of its tentacles. That's why it kept hiding them under its main body.

To me it seems more like they are trying to catch anything that escapes as well as catch the octopus off guard. Groupers love octopus and aren't attacking outright because they know it would be a difficult fight. However, the moment the octopus gets attacked and injured by a different marine animal, those groupers will swarm it and start taking turns grabbing a mouthful.

Octopuses often protect their arms and this behavior isn't unique to groupers, but clearly this octopus recognizes the risk of its followers and is hunting cautiously.

When the camera is off, the groupers then turn on the octopus, as so many videos have shown!

I swear the guys with the cameras at times affect the ending of these recorded scenes not only other fish fighting for their lives or the octopus but then they have to look at this guy with a camera following them around

Noticed the octopus did it's best to keep the tips of its tentacles underneath itself, so the groups wouldn't get an easy snack.

It seems more like the groupers are aware that sometimes prey escapes the octopus when he's doing all the heavy lifting and learned to wait nearby in case food comes shooting out. I don't wonder if the octopus is annoyed or if he realizes that they're only getting the prey that he is missing. If he isn't bothered by it, that has to be cooperative. Even if both sides are using eachother, that's what all cooperative actions are, even though we equate them with morality it's just a functional partnership that we turn into a bond as humans.
