Getting away from it all on a deserted island sounds like a wonderful idea, doesn’t it? But then
again, there are some islands that are so mysterious and scary that you might get nightmares
reading about them. From the possible sight of the legendary garden of Eden to an island that
may be home to aliens, let’s have a look at the 10 most mysterious islands on earth.
Number 10.) Island of Socotra
Off the coast of Yemen, there is an island that looks like an alien planet. Known as the Socotra
island, or the biblical garden of Eden, its endangered flora is unique due to the remote location’s
isolation, temperature extremes, and arid conditions. A third of its plant life can be found
nowhere else on Earth. Fortunately, 70 percent of the island has been set aside as a national park.
Some of the plants look like turnips planted upside down. The island’s bottle tree, adapted to
store water in a dry climate, has a thick trunk, and it's few limbs, thick near the trunk, give rise to
clusters of much thinner branches ending in thick clumps of green leaves. There are also
mushroom-like trees there. The island has huge caves that are homes to bats, the only mammal
native to Socotra. Messages in a variety of languages have been carved into the caves’ walls.
Researchers attribute them to sailors who stayed on the island between AD 1 and 6. The
residents of the mysterious island are also unique: They all have a DNA haplogroup possessed
by no other people on Earth. In 2008, the UNESCO named Socotra a World Heritage Site
Number 9.) Palmyra Atoll

Located 1000 miles south of Hawaii, Palmyra is not really an island, it is an atoll. It is a territory
owned by the United States, and it is officially uninhabited, even though some government
officials do live there, doing some type of secret work. The U.S. military built an airstrip there
during World War II, which has fallen into disrepair, although it is still used for infrequent
supply runs. The island has been part of a lot of rumors and scary stories. The atoll was formed
by a growing reef that caused quite a few shipwrecks, one which resulted in a rumored cache of
gold on the land. It is said to be haunted by the sailors who died there, and it was also the setting
for a sensational double murder in 1974 that became the basis for the novel and then miniseries
called And the Sea Will Tell. Ships passing by have claimed seeing lights glowing at night, sea
monsters, and even weird voices.
Number 8.) Vulcan island
To make things clearer, Vulcan is not really an island. It is actually a point on an island. Lake
Taal in the Philippines is one of only two lakes in the world with a third-order island within it.
Confused? Let us explain it to you. Lake Taal, which is located within the island of Luzon in the
northern end of the Philippines archipelago, has a Volcano island that has a Crater lake that has
its own small island called Vulcan Point. So, Vulcan Point is a third-order island. Responsible
for the lake’s sulfuric content, Volcano Island also is the location of Taal Volcano’s historical
eruptions. The crater at the top of the Volcano Island is filled with water giving rise to Crater
Lake and Vulcan Point is a small bump on Crater Lake. Lake Taal is a popular tourist point but
that doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous. The volcano had several violent eruptions in the past
causing loss of life on the island and the populated areas surrounding the lake, with the death toll
estimated at around 5,000 to 6,000. Because of its proximity to populated areas and its eruptive

history, the volcano was designated a Decade Volcano, worthy of close study to prevent future
natural disasters
Number 7.) Easter Island
Even if you are not familiar with the name of this island, we are sure that you already saw it
before, or parts of it. There are almost 900 of very cool carved figures with oversized faces and
they date centuries back. These were actually the people who lived on the island, known as Rapa
Nui. Unaided by anyone from outside, the Rapa Nui carved and moved these huge statues
themselves. The iconic statues are a huge tourist attraction and were created by Polynesian
engineers and expert craftsmen. Like all mysteries, no one understands the true purpose behind
these figures or how they were sprinkled all over Easter Island. Raiders who kidnapped Rapa Nui
to sell as slaves reduced their population from thousands to barely more than 100, and infighting
and disease wiped out the rest, leaving their origin and, until recently, the creation of their
statues, secrets as mysterious as the island itself.
