The Devonian Period (420– 358 Million years ago) is also known as the era of Fish, since this was the the time these primordial vertebrates radiated into multiple clades, like the armored Placoderms, the first Sharks or the group that would give origin to all Tetrapods, the Sarcopterygii. These early tetrapods evolved lungs and took their first steps on a land that was still almost barren, until then only colonized by the earliest plants, some arthropods and giant fungi. This period ended in a massive extinction.

*correction at 2:11: Tartuosteus is not a Sarcopterygii. it's a much more primitive Pteraspidiformes

I love all the placoderm fish and primitive sharks that look like absolute surreal fever dream creations - it makes you wonder what fantastical looking species we DON'T know about and might never since only a few things are ever fossilized...

It’s scary to think that back in the Devonian period, the largest living creature at the time was the Dunkleosteus, before any large land animals or dinosaurs existed.

I love this period.
Lots of strange creatures in the ocean while the many animal groups started to colonize land. And the first terrestrial ecosystem appeared.
I really loved this vid. You should have added the first insect ever, they appeared on this period

The Devonian is chock-full of oddities, and I'm so glad they've been represented here. The Heterosteus and Bungartius in particular are some that I love. And I love that some more obscure ones get some attention, such as Gonioclymenia, Parameteoraspis, Acutiramus, and Erbenochile. Your finest vids are the ones that focus on lesser known animals, and this is definitely one of your best! Please keep making vids on lesser known creatures, they're stellar! And also please make vids on the Ordovician, Silurian, Cambrian, and Precambrian seas.

Edit: holy cow I've never gotten so many likes in such a short period of time. Thank you all! 💚

If such fascinating things have existed on planet Earth than question does arise what has come and gone out there in the universe?

The Devonian Period: A time when "getting dunked on" had a very different and much more violent meaning.

My favorite was the Taeguosteus. The face it made is funny. Looks like a vacuum for a mouth and is like “Mario Welcome to the Devonian in the Baltics.

There’s a few giant arthropods that were Silurian-Devonian not mentioned here: Brontoscorpio, and Jaekelopterus who could reach 3 metres in length (some averages 2.5-6 but 3 metres for bigger) and a few more. Also: “Pet peeve” but not 2m but rather Acutiramus, the giant Eurypterid, could reach 2.1 metres long. Dunkleosteus was of course too downsized with the largest again now being 4.1 metres long with a 3.4-8 average for many specimens. Titanichthys was also 4-4.1 metres long due to the downsize.
