In a couple of previous videos, we went over the Multicast Underlay for VXLAN, and we showed how this can be configured on Cisco Nexus switches. (See links below). There are however some caveats involved with the deployment of a multicast underlay for VXLAN, especially for high-performance high availability datacenters and cloud infrastructure. These caveats have to do with how multicast operates in a typical spine and leaf VXLAN topology.

In this video, I will go over some of these weaknesses of a conventional multicast solution and show how an Anycast RP solution is a more appropriate multicast arrangement for VXLAN. Note that to understand the content of this video, it is a good idea to be familiar with the operation of multicast technologies including Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) Sparse Mode as well as Rendezvous Points (RPs) and Anycast communication.

Virtual eXtensible LAN, or VXLAN is a network virtualization technology that is exceptionally useful for large datacenter and cloud computing deployments. VXLAN has been developed to overcome some of the limitations of scalability that are inherent to more traditional Layer 2 technologies.
