Nimetön Hauta - Huntu j​ä​rvien yllä (full ep, 2022)

The new Canti Eretici label has really introduced themselves in spectacular form, from the dungeon psychedelia of Wizardkeep, through theatrical sorcery of Xanathar, and now a turn to the wilds, with the next set of tapes.

Inspired by nature and human struggle, Nimetön Hauta’s debut EP is an evocatively harsh atmospheric black metal release, roughed by the wilderness, hewn by calloused hands from bone, bark and the blood of survival. It exudes a sense of melancholia, through the reverbed melodies, while the screeched vocals burn with a tense, terse fire.

In parts it reminds me of Dodsrit, with strung-out post-rock riff progressions; and at others its somnolent folk haze recalls the nostalgic rural reverence of Grift, conveyed thorough the sepia hues of the cover art, and the long-range landscape photography. The view from a detached observer.
