My Man Godfrey (1936) Black & White vs Colorized Scenes

Scenes from the 1936 classic screwball comedy MY MAN GODFREY in both the original black and white and the colorized version that was produced in the 1990s.

The film, directed by Gregory La Cava and starring Carole Lombard and William Powell is one of the finest examples of 1930s screwball comedy.

This is a crazy, funny movie about a wealthy family with a butler that came from the city dump. Butler is educated and has obviously been to college. Won’t reveal his past. Good movie.

Oddly enough, I watched a colorized version of Its a Wonderful Life my first time watching it, and I didn’t realize it wasn’t shot in technicolor until afterwards. It was quite good and I couldn’t even tell it was a colorization. But I still prefer them in b&w if they were originally in b&w. A good colorization can be quite nice, though.

This is one of the few instances where I actually like the colorized version. I'm usually opposed to it because it adds information that wasnt informed by the filmmakers, and gives you a conflicted presentation of their original vision. I mean, could you imagine The Third Man or The Informer or Night of the Hunter in color? I don't think I could.

I have a filter on my camera which allows me to utilize contrasting black and color in the pictures. Its really cool and a way we can honor the past as well as embrace the future

Colorized is okay sometimes, but so often the color fades in and out and changes hues, and makes it not so enjoyable to watch. This particular one I’ll take in black and white. An enjoyable picture.

I love old movies but in black and white only for me adding the color takes away from them for me
