As a veteran who has traveled extensively overseas to include recreating the Bataan Death March, we can thank the Philippines for not agreeing to allow the US to retain all of the bases. Sure the volcanic eruption compounded the issue, but the Subic Bay Naval Base was quickly cleaned up and ready to go. Clark was pretty much destroyed and looted though, but we had quite a few other bases that were in perfect condition. The US departure created a power vacuum, which China has been quick to fill.

Taiwan is the democratic party who represents China, while the Beijing represents it's Communist party... both has the rights to say they are China... but the land they occupy are separate and are independent entity to each other that represents China... which thereby has its own sovereignity to depend and rules/regulations to follow.
The real issue is that the communist party of China wants to absorb the democratic regime that represents China to achieve its world domination in the Pacific Ocean to further increase its influence on Asia Pacific Economic development.
Their case or situation is just like "South Korea & North Korea" - they both represent Korea with different stands and government with different approach. Can be said that they established two countries in one island with one roots but different idealism.
The difference with Beijing & Taiwan was that Beijing was strong enough to declare or easily claim Taiwan as one. The communist party aim was to claim that whatever territory Taiwan claims... They also have the right to that under the notion that they both have the same roots or origin. As long as they can legitimately validate their rights or connection to Taiwan as China they can force thier way to ancient claims on Pacific Ocean Territory that their Ancient China supposively should have owned... the thing is that they ignored all the facts that also happened in the history... Including all those countries who claimed their land before they were China. Mongols should own China.
