Canada introduced new energy efficiency regulations that posed potential challenges for future boiler retrofits. However, these challenges were not insurmountable, albeit requiring additional planning and, in some cases, increased expenses for the retrofit process.

An important development was the implementation of Amendment 15 to Canada's Energy regulations, which mandated that all boilers achieve a minimum of 90% efficiency by January 1st, 2023. Moreover, commercial boilers faced an accelerated timeline, with new rules set to take effect from July 1st, 2023. While there was an abundance of condensing equipment available, it was essential to consider potential limitations that might arise, particularly concerning aspects like venting.

During an interactive discussion on the future of hydronic heating, both commercial and residential, Tom Heckbert from IBC and Michael Ridler from Eden Energy Equipment provided detailed insights into these changes. They addressed the implications of the new regulations and also fielded questions from participants.

Does this apply to rural wood-fired boilers? Those can't be 90% even if made condensing. But then wood isn't a fossil fuel, so I sure hope these policies don't apply to wood burning appliances.
