In the village Pyrgos (tower) in Tinos, Chalepas was born in 1851. He studied in Athens and in Munich, and came back in his native village after a nervous breakdown. He lived there under the strict supervision of his despotic mother. After her death, he went back in Athens and started again work. He was a bold, sensible artist, a tortured soul. The "workshop" in his native house is just an underground place to survive.
