Cicada Chorus Fills Air the Air in Virginia Woods

A chorus of Brood X cicadas filled the air of a woodland in Vienna, Virginia, on June 1, as the insects continued to emerge in the eastern United States.

The cicada broods come out in pockets each year in the central, southeast, and northeastern United States, Timshel Purdum, a bug expert at the Science Museum of Virginia, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Brood X emerges every 13 or 17 years.

Purdum said the male cicadas make their sound in an attempt to attract a mate.

Was in the woods yesterday, there are Thousands of little holes in the ground in the dirt, the size of your pinky, everywhere you looked and walked there are holes in the ground. It was kinda freaky a little bit. . . What else is down there¿?¿. . .
