Since 2010, the market share of natural gas has increased more than any other energy source. Many would agree that natural gas consumption is not likely to endure in the long term, due to rising political, economic, and social awareness about decarbonization efforts. On the other hand, Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), has argued that natural gas is one of the mainstays of global energy as it replaces more polluting fuels, improves air quality and limits carbon dioxide emissions. Furthermore, several major phenomena, such as rising energy demand in Asia, the shale gas revolution in the US, and the increasing popularity of the LNG trade are also noteworthy developments.

This Digital Debates will explore the future of natural gas, the kind of shifts to expect in the international gas outlook and the engagement among market actors at different levels of energy supply, transit and demand.
