I own a small grocery store. I made the decision a few years ago to switch to brown paper bags.

An "individual responsibility" approach is wishful thinking, since the point of consumption is often too late to make a significant difference. Manufacturers and retailers will continue to force plastics into the system as long as they are not required/incentivized to use alternative materials.

Buy 2nd hand and use glass and metal containers, and jars to refill. Use cloth bags. Stop buying plastic, it wasn't used 60 years ago.

Funny that Matt says it was such a big surprise that our recycling was being sent to Malaysia and Indonesia where it may or may not be recycled since Canadian and Australian tv outlets has been been reporting on that fact for years which can easily be found on YouTube.

I stopped recycling a decade ago once I found out most of the plastics never got recycled in the first place. Maybe aluminum and glass actually get recycled - but recycling plastic things is pretty much a joke.

We don't recycle plastic bags, we use them as trash bags.

I love how you continue to insist at the end that consumers have choice of this. Excuse me, but have you ever tried to buy any mainstream products? There is no consumer choice. This is all on the backs of corporations making decisions that are out of our hands. Sure, where possible and when price is reasonably close I will opt for the cardboard container over a plastic one any day, for example. I can't change the fact that every single major cracker company uses plastic liners instead of wax paper. As a low income family, our choices are even more limited to try to avoid plastic. Stop trying to pin this on consumers. The entire blame for this is on corporations.

😮😮years ago My husband worked at a recycling plant that burned certain plastics and other materials into energy

I reuse everything I can, because the men who come to pick up the recycling and trash, don't care what they are doing and I am tired of complaining about different issues with them, and nothing being done. So I have to take my plastic bags somewhere to be recycled, because if not my trash gets opened and put on the front lawn. But according to our county trash officials that is ok. So I don't want to hear about helping the environment, I do all I can already.

My plastic bags from Wally-World and Targett, (French pronunciation, of course) are the primary trash can liners for the old homestead. Also used for keeping various parts connected to a disassembled device.

The ironic thing is if you throw out a bottle in Denver, it gets buried in the ground. If you recycle it, it very may well be shipped to Indonesia and end up as trash in the ocean, causing way more environmental harm.

A few stores sell bulk that you can bring your own container for. You tare it and pay for the weight of the food. Sprouts is one.

It's all bad news when it comes to the truth behind recycling. We need to pressure manufacturers to remove plastic packaging.

Avoid plastics is better than recycling

Wish this had more views. Influencers need to take leadership roles here.

This is information I learned about years ago. Plastic recycling has been a scam since it started.

This recycling scam has been common knowledge for years.

If you think anything is being recycled you're in denial. The "recycle" symbol on plastic isn't a recycling sign it's just a plastic identifier. The recycle logo is public domain as of a decade ago. 2% if that is recycled. We have to move into the stop of making new plastic.
