My Apple IIgs Setup

By popular demand. An overview of my Apple IIgs computer system. Yes, I do have my machine connected to my stereo system.

That is a great setup! This is the first video I’ve seen with an Audio Animator. I got one when they came out and used it with midi keyboards and drum machines - such a great accessory. Since you have a Grappler, you can get a NEWPRINT for it to be able to capture the output and (via pdf) print to a modern printer.

Nice pimped out system! I like that you gave your personal history with the IIGS, interesting to learn you didn't use the machine until later on. Haven't seen DOCVu before, it's really cool, I may just need to get that. :) Thanks for sharing, awesome setup!

You should go into the management options and play with the startup sounds. I remember it being adjustable. I like the high pitched one. Reset, control and option will take you to those much like this disk will. If my memory serves me right it’s under the control panel.

It is a period correct 40MB SCSI drive. The CD-ROM is an Apple CD-SC+ 1X drive, its just a standard Sony SCSI drive in an Apple case. Apple built CD support into GS/OS from the start when it was released in 1988, unlike the Amiga which didn't see official support until the release of the CDTV and A570 CD add-on in 1991 (SCSI/IDE drives need 3rd party drivers). Most games could be hard disk installed if they weren't copy protected or cracked. Applications were universally hard drive installable.

Did the hard drive always sound like that during shut-down? I have a Compaq Portable Plus and the hard drive was 'stuck' when I got it. I got it working now but on shut-down it makes the same noise as yours.

I spy an Epson HX-20 I spy down near the FastPath. And is that an actual 40 MB SCSI drive in the Apple box, or is it an MFM drive using an ST506-to-SCSI adapter?

The IIGS was arguably one of the best systems Apple ever built. And sadly it was neglected in favor of the Macintosh (which was still very much non-expandable and less capable than any Apple II made at that time).

Synthlab sounds much better on a real IIgs than on a emulator like GSport and MAME.

When they say any apple 2 users, what exactly is an apple 2 user? What do you do with an apple 2 these days beyond playing some games nostalgically and exhibition?

Awesome explanation and user video of a machine not many know to much about. You didn't mention much about the CD-Rom drive, which must be quite rare I'm guessing. I'd love to hear the story about how you acquired it. Also, what kind of capacity is the Hard Drive? Did many applications or games come ready to be installed on a hard drive, or did you have to do a little black magic in order to install them. Thanks.

Nah, it started doing that a few years ago. I never had a problem with it spinning up.

Alright I have 2gs but I don't have a monitor so what I did is connect the 2gs to a digital monitor it 😉
