Bei vielen neuen Seilen ist in der Wintersaison eine erste Kürzung des Seiles mit einem neuen Spleiß notwendig. So eine Nachtaktion ist eine Herausforderung. Der Fahrgast merkt nichts, am nächsten Tag geht die Bahn ganz normal in Betrieb.

I am a skier and also a civil engineer. Everytime I sit inside a Gondola or on a chairlift, I just wonder how cable system able to joint together without welding or mecahnical couplers (i.e. Peak 2 Peak Gondola between Whistler Mountain & Blackcomb Mountain spans approximate 4.5km lenght, which requires at least 4.5km x2 = 9km continuous and uniform diameter cable. Cable manufacturers cannot roll such lenght (9km) of cable at factory. Also it has transportation problem (weight of 9km cable is too heavy) and maintenance problem (too expensive to replace whole cable) if the cable is too long.

Now I understand how ski chairlift cable spliced. This is the art of engineering without using welding or coupler (need uniform diameter of cable at splicing point) to ensure cable able to pass pulleys smoothly at support tower).

I just wonder is there any destructive test (or certification) to ensure the spliced joint is stronger than the cable itself in order to demonstrate adequate strength at this mechanical spliced joint.

Also I am interested to know how to tensioning the cable after installation the cable to the pulley system. Also how to de-tensioning the cable for maintenance and replacement too.

Personalaufwändige Sache, so wie es aussieht. Wie das im Detail abläuft bzw. funktioniert habe ich allerdings nicht verstanden.
