In this new story time segment, I wanted to spend some time featuring athletes who inspire at every level of life. Great athletes, sure. But also those who lived great lives!

In this first episode I decided to feature the life and accomplishments of Jim Thorpe, a hero and man of good character too. This is a brief history of his life and accomplishments. There is so much more that I couldn't include. But sufficeth to say, the more I read about him, the more impressed I've become. I recommend all take some time to learn about Jim and his history.

Written and narrated by Ryan Shanahan with excerpts taken from various online sources.

Some video footage is used from the Olympic game channel for the purpose of illustration and commentary, and falls under fair use of the patent law.

Wow! So with all odds against him and terrible prejudice this man went on to become a legendary athlete and an inspiration to millions. Talk about perseverance and strength 💪🏽I have so much respect for Jim Thorpe.

A great man as well as a great athlete. I saw the movie Jim Thorpe - All American with Bert Lancaster in 1951 and admired him ever since. It helped me realize that racial prejudice is misguided.

You have done such a supremely well appointed narration of this man's span of life, a French-Potawatomi, Kickapoo & Sauk Fox man who was my grandmother's second cousin (Charlotte Vieux-descendant of French fur trader: Jacques Vieux).

Your spoken grammer, with your words showing at times the inflections of an alert, inquisitive wildly collegiate, in a highly distinguished nerdy gentleman type feel I gather thru watching this twice now ...it made me emotional & yes I cried unexpectedly.

You honor me and my Vieux-Wamego-Tomey-Nhoktonik Potawatomi & Kickapoo family by how you spoke to me..as you spoke to everyone who'll learn more about Mr. Thorpe as you speak to my cousin Jim Thorpe himself perhaps.. in your very words of genuine affection that is what I personally HEARD in your historical narration voice that pays such a modern tribute to his courage that must somehow be seen in me and you and his grandchildren the best athletic record scored and kept that retells upon each generation ; his resolve & our American amidexterity cannot be beaten as we turn our face to our foe and only see the faces of all our many friends.

Thank you for giving Jacobus Thorpe an up to date, modern new and younger collegiate styled voice. Who he was and what he stood for speaks thru you. I like that.

Jim Thorpe was also the best football player of his generation and an accomplished professional baseball and basketball player. As well as the national collegiate ballroom dancing champion.

I see his picture everywhere when I was in a hospital a few weeks ago at the Jim Thorpe outpatient and inpatient facility. I was very curious to find out who this great person is.

I'd rather watch a movie about Jim Thorpe, than the same old capeshit movies.

In high school in Oklahoma, Thorpe was only the schools second best athlete. There was another Indian bigger stronger and faster. But Thorpe stayed w it, the better athlete did not.

Imagine that fact, second best in high school. Wow

In 1954, the town of Mauch Chunk was renamed as Jim Thorpe in Pennsylvania, Carbon County when Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk merged.
