Second Flip on the 2 Ingredient Compost Pile

When I was turning my newest pile, I thought about the issue that you mentioned at the beginning of the video. I had started this pile in an area that I had not previously had a pile and needed to move a piece of equipment that was in the area that I needed to move the pile to. I had been moving another more complete pile, so I had a flat bladed shovel as well as my pitch fork. When I moved the piece of equipment, I found a copperhead. It was a bit cool, so he wasn't moving very quickly. Needless to say, he is now a body-less copperhead. Just for the record, I do not indiscriminately kill snakes, but I draw the line at poisonous ones.

LOVE this series! Takes so much pressure off trying to get the right balance of brown vs green material and adding food scraps, chicken manure and bedding, etc. I'm hoping I can manage 2 simple ingredients. THANK YOU!

We turn our pile, back into the cage. Top to the side, put the middle in the cage, top in the middle, bottom on top, just like you, but we just put it back in the cage.

How much compost per square foot will help loosen tight packed clay soil?

The nutrients look great according to my soil test, but nothing will grow due to the composition of the soil. I need to add enough organic material to change the density and when its usable, I'll get anothe soil sample and go from there.

I am trying this in South West Colorado where it is very dry. I've watered every layer and have it covered. Do you think it can make compost in 18 days? It usually takes a year with me not doing anything. So I will try this method. First turn will be Thursday.

Q&A: I live in NW Indiana by Lake Michigan. We have basically sand. Despite adding compost for 4 years, it still has a terrible time holding onto nutrients. Tomatoes suffer from blossom end rot, etc. The soil swallows compost like a kid with cake. All organic here, not certified, just in practice. Any advice?

I’m considering switching to a wood pellet cat litter box. What are your thoughts on composting the used wood cat litter pellets in compost? Will hot compost kill enough of the baddies to use compost with cat waste in it in the garden? If not, it should be good for ornamentals right?

#AMA Hope I did that right. When planting various fruit bearing trees, do you follow the typical 25 circle spacing for a typical tree? 15ft semi dwarf, 8 for dwarf etc?

So many composting vids mention 18 days. I'm assuming if you're not in a rush you could take it a lot easier on the green/brown ratio and all the flipping, right? Or are there dangers in just piling stuff in a cage and letting the circle of life commence? After all, Mother Nature doesn't lay down dead material in alternating layers, covering it, and flipping every two days.
