Teachers say we should get out side more and yet the give us homework

I remember passing out one time doing a project because I was just so tired. I woke up at 2am feeling gross and kept working until 5am. I went to bed and woke up at 7am to go to school. Last year, I remember being assigned a lot of homework before Christmas. My family watched a movie, while I sat hunched over my computer until ( I started at 10:00 pm )2am trying to finish my assignment. By the time I finished, the movie was over and everyone went to bed while my head throbbed. I looked forward to Christmas eve. :(

I get if they give a little, like an hour worth of work, but to give us TOO much, like adding another of couple of hours in, is overwhelming. They say it's to prepare us for "life." GET OUT OF HERE.

My teacher was like, “it’s school work you just make it home work.” I’m just like bi*** no, I have no time to do it, I cry over it cuz I get so stressed from it. Teachers don’t give a crap they just pile it on to us and force us to do it. It’s illegal they can’t force us to do it. And most of the stuff in school that we learn isn’t even helpful. Like I don’t need to know the volume of a cube, I don’t plan on using anything I learned in school for the job I really want. I hate school and homework!!!

Last year (9th grade) I took all advanced classes. Over Christmas break I had a 12 page packet of algebraic equations along with map sketches for geography along with an assignment to read the entire Charles Dickens novel, A Christmas Carol and answer about 40 questions from the story. I did homework the entire plane ride to my grandparents house (East Texas to New York City) and still had assignments to finish while I was there. I was cooped up in the guest bedroom doing homework the entire time and never spent time with my family. I even began getting anxiety attacks and vomiting because of the stress and nervousness from the work. I did homework the entire 2- week break and barely took time to eat or sleep. I lost about 5 pounds that Christmas break and I've never gained them back because the homework load only got worse from there. I'm a 5'3 16 year old girl and I weigh 96 pounds because I don't have time to eat or sleep from homework and studying. My hair even began to fall out.

There is research supporting the idea that homework is of little educational value, and that for young children (i.e., 14 and under) it may have a negative effect on learning.

Commentator Alfie Kohn argues that homework can create family conflict, reduce quality of life through boredom, destroy curiosity, and love of learning (replacing intrinsic motivation with extrinsic motivation) and takes time away from independent study and extracurricular, family, and social activities important to childhood development.
