Sitting in on a kid's therapy session

While 60 Minutes was at the Urgent Care Walk-in Clinic for Mental Health at Children's Wisconsin - a place specifically opened for kids and teens in crisis - a mother and her 11-year-old daughter came in looking for help. The young girl had been struggling with anxiety and depression. After the intake process, Tammy Maklouf did a therapy session with the mother and daughter to come up with an actionable plan that they could implement until they were able to get more help. They invited us to sit in.

I noticed the young girl didn't get the chance to really talk until 3.5 minutes into the video. I think the therapist talked with the mother too much to describe her daughter's feelings.

I dont think parents should be involved in kids therapy sessions, the only reason kids talk to therapists in the first place is because the kids cant talk to their parents or their parents dont beleive them

I believe that no parent should ever be a part of a therapy session because parents or any sort of higher presence will cause a child to feel like they need to be a certain way. They don’t feel like going there going to be definitely not a free spirit during a therapy session if a parent is with them.

Mom is talking too much. Daughter seems uncomfortable in her chair and not as much of the process.

I think the problem is THE MOM... not the girls. PERIOD !!!

You can see the mom and therapist really love being on this show. Both are applying a lot of overt impression management techniques during this "therapy session".

I like that this session has the parent involed. Like couples therapy this therapist can see the issues of both parties.

Why can’t the daughter talk to her mother exactly like she is talking to the therapist? Very respectfully.

Okay. So I go to thearpy. And obviously I talk to my therapist about personal things. If I were that girl I would not feel comfortable have a camera in the same room talking about personal things

every other word coming from the couselor is "like".. sounds unprofessional honestly like I dont respect that. also, her questions are not open ended, they are leading toward a certain answer. not good counseling in my non-expert opinion.

Highly unethical to film and air a child's (or any person's) therapy session. This is extremely wrong.
