We still have our share of weirdos - always take precautions.

This is very misleading. It amazes me the way Americans come to Europe and think that they can just throw caution to the wind. As a general rule, if it wouldn’t be safe to do it over there then it’s probably not safe here, either. Where I live in East London there are high levels of violent crime. Guns are less easily available but there are still shootings, stabbings and acid attacks around here. I take the same precautions here that I do in the USA. I absolutely do not walk alone in isolated areas in any part of the world. Several women have been murdered in the U.K. whilst doing that. Don’t get lulled into a false sense of security.

Clarify where you stay though hun, plenty of places in England/UK are 10x worse than Americans think contrary to what you say.

I agree. I always felt safe when I lived there too. Being a single woman living in Oxford for 2.5 years and never felt unsafe once.

I'm pleased you like it here in the UK, but please, PLEASE, don't get complacent on the differences between our countries.

US population is 5x of UK. Also times are tougher for the average Briton right now

As someone who has lived in both the US and the UK I agree that I feel unsafe far more often in the US. Even from simple things like most areas in the US not being built for pedestrians and lacking proper crosswalks. There is a lot more to contribute to that feeling than in the UK

Take a trip to Bradford you'd change your opinion.

In England there are many no go areas…even for police. Safety in some cities is at best an illusion. This is coming from a special operator that conducts cross training with British forces. We do rotations with our sister unit in Britain.

It's not guns, it's demographics. Go to Brixton in South London and you have the same type of people that make most American inner cities unsafe 🤷‍♂️

She feels so safe yet she has to keep one eye looking over her shoulder. Literally.

The homicide problem is not caused by guns, but rather evil people. Please educate yourself on the subject, Kristin.

The difference in the murder rate between the UK and the US can be directly attributed to a single demographic.

African Americans comprise 12% of the population, but account for 52% of all homicides in the US.

There were 17, 284 homicides in the US in 2017, a rate of 5.3 per 100, 000. In Britain, there were 785 in 2017/2018 a rate of 1.8 per 100, 000.

US (White: 75.5%, Black 13.6%)
UK (White: 81.7%, Black: 4.0%)

I’ve been to America all around it.

As a UK citizen I can tell you that this country is done for.

I agree that the States can seem a little scary compared to the UK. However I’ve managed to find a little safe haven here in the USA to live and raise kids without the stress of urban problems or wild animals. In the UK you have a lot of feral kids off council estates roaming the streets and it’s nearly impossible to stay away from them. I visited the UK countryside this summer and the day after I arrived one of these kids tried to head-butt my brother-in-law for accidentally getting in his way. Welcome to Britain.

Aren't there random stabbings in the UK?

There are places in London where you best not go. As an American living in the UK like I do, I feel safe most of the time where I live. But I felt safe in my hometown in the US, too. Did I worry about guns there? No, because as a gun owner and a concealed carry permit holder, I had the means to defend myself if I so chose to exercise the privilege. But until the recent advent of homeless encampments and lax law enforcement, it was very safe. I think our murder rate was about the same as it is here in West Sussex.
