Disease control expert debunks coronavirus myths | Expert Opinion

Is Covid-19 any worse than seasonal flu? Does hand sanitizer, or alcohol, kill coronavirus? Should you be wearing a face mask and should you be worried about your dog getting coronavirus? The global outbreak has spawned numerous questions, myths and outright misinformation about what to do and how to avoid spreading the virus.

We asked Dr Bharat Pankhania, Senior Clinical Lecturer at Exeter Medical School and an expert in communicable disease control, to debunk some of the most common myths surrounding the virus outbreak, also known as Covid-19.

When there are news broadcasts showing a woman that had wrapped herself up in plastic grocery store bags to pick her child up from school it's obvious there's a ton of bad information getting out there.

Thank you for that Doctor. I'm a retired medic, with experience of working on an infectious diseases ward who unfortunately has co morbidities but am asymptomatic at present. Much is about common sense. Basic everyday hygiene needs to just be "tweaked" such as hand washing. I'm disabled, I only go out for food but I don't see the need for a face mask, just keeping a reasonable distance should suffice. We all have to live, work and face up to this new " fight"! If it's going to happen then it's going to happen! We just need to at the very least plug any open holes to slow it down! Have a nice day.

that percentage rate is too high. they're counting deaths against the number of confirmed cases but arent taking into consideration the variable of non reported milder cases. so while were getting an accurate death count we're not getting an accurate case count . so the amount infected is higher so that'll mean a lower death rate percentage
