Join me in this video as we explore the early Jurassic (possibly late Triassic) Kayenta Formation, a unique rock layer in Eastern Utah which was deposited near the Triassic-Jurassic Mass Extinction Event 200 million years ago. Along the way, we will learn about some of the interesting fossils, including dinosaurs known from the rock layer.

Check out Doug's YouTube channel for amazing dinosaur tracks, and pictures of the beautiful landscape of eastern Utah:

Another amazing video! I want to thank you for all the videos you have made, especially your paleontology ones. Watching your “Natural History of Dinosaurs” playlist inspired me to do something that I always dreamed of as a child. This spring of 2020, I will be attending Bowling Green State University with a major of Paleobiology! I’ve had a hard time trying to decide what I want to do with my life. Watching your videos and remembering what made me happy when I was young made me realize that paleontology and dinosaurs are one of the few things that have always been a part of my life. So thank you again for not only motivating me to take the leap, but also for all of the amazing information I have learned that will help me as I move on to the next step!

How lush of a paleoenvironment are we talking about in the Kayenta? Temperate forests or shrubland?

Just riveting! I have to say, I was staggered when I heard you say that 95% of the plants died through the Triassic/Jurassic mass extinction event. I didn't know that - that's just hair-raising! And with this there comes my question: Was it really 95% of all the plants or was it 95% of the plant species (which would be still hair-raising, but one wouldn't have to envision an earth quasi bare of all green) that passed?
