Old City Cemetery
This Public Burying Ground was situated at the outskirts of the newly settled Town of Monticello, and is the final resting place for a cross-section of the town's population, including settlers, slaves, planters, politicians, and Confederate soldiers. Grave markers represent changing burial styles - from simple wooden plaques used in the Territorial and Antebellum periods, which have long ago rotted away, to brick vaults, to the five rare "coffin" vaults not found anywhere else in Florida, to the more elaborate cast iron, bronze and marble structures commonly used in the latter part of the 1800's.
