On Saturday 20 April 1912, a man by the name of C.A. Mathew came out of Liverpool Street Station carrying his camera.

There’s no telling why he decided to a stroll around the streets of Spitalfields on that day and take photographs. But in doing so, he captured the lost world of the then Jewish East End of London.

While in this video we’ll be walking from Liverpool Street to Aldgate, we’ll take a detour around the 1912 streets of Spitalfields, on the 110th anniversary of Mathew’s walk.

Number 3 of 408 in a series of walking between every London Underground station.

Filmed on 20 April 2022.

Loved this. Beautiful faces of all those children. I used to work in St. Mary Axe. I used Liverpool Street station. Sometimes, Aldgate East station. Thank you for sharing.

It’s the lack of children nowadays that hurts the most

Very interesting video. My ancestors on Grand mothers side lived in this area. I know my 4 greats grandfather was living in Steward Street in 1834 where he witnessed the theft of a horse and cart of flour. He gave evidence at Old Bailey and 19 year old was found guilty and transported for life.
My greats grandfather was an engraver born in 1810 and run refreshment houses that a couple of times went bankrupt. Going bankrupt meant two stays in debtors prison for him.
His son Walter (3 greats grandfather) also sent to prison for 22 months for bigamy. He was an architects assistant at the time 😆
