My first new car was a 71 Super Beetle. At the time, they still made the regular Beetle but I bought mine in September of 71. Congress had just repealed the Federal Exiise Tax on cars and there was a temporary price freeze so I knew I wouldn't be able to ever get one any cheaper. I still have th bill of sale. I looked it up for someone recently and with distination charges to the midwest and an AM radio, the cost was $2196. A few weeks later, i received a check for the refunded exise tax. If memory serves an old man properly, that was about $100. For $100 in 1971, a 22 year old could party like a rock star fora whole weekend.

Classic VW fan and enthusiast from Tacloban City, Leyte Island, Philippines here. My main interest are the super beetle models: 1302s and 1303s. My first car when I was a newly licensed physician was a 1974 VW 1303s. I drove it daily until Nov 7 2013. The following day super typhoon Haiyan submerged the whole city in a 16 feet storm surge. It destroyed my beetle. Year 2015 I drove a newly restored 1971 VW 1302s super beetle which I drive daily until now. Year 2015 I bought an brand new 2015 VW tiguan TDI. Later I sold the tiguan to my sister. As for my beetle I will drive it daily as long as it lasts. For me the super beetle is a bettter car compared to the standard beetle. It's bigger, handles better and has a more powerful engine. You just have to be very careful on the road because there many aggresive drivers on SUVs. Just sharing my experience. 🙂

In the air cooled VW community every old air cooled beetle, Ghia, bus is special to us. I definitely wouldn't say that they are undesirable.

Loved my “71 Super. Got her in 76. Drove that car everywhere, put tens of thousands miles on that baby. Enough room to pack up for week long camping / fishing / skiing trips in the Sierras, trips to L.A., Mexico, Reno. Hundreds and hundreds of times to Punk Rock shows in San Francisco, Berkeley, Santa Clara and everyday S.F Bay Area daily / work driving. Did everything myself to keep her humming. My life changed in the late eighties and sold her when I got into 4X4s. We got ourselves a 68 five years ago and loving the bug life again.

I had the semi-automatic ‘73 Beetle. Super clean condition. The shifter had Reverse and gear 1, 2, 3 with no clutch pedal… ended up selling to a VW Bug fan that is handicapped, left leg injuries from very young age. He always wanted a bug but never got it because of his condition and when he heard about mine, he hunt me down to do an offer.. at first, I didn’t want to sell it but then I felt good he end up keeping it. I miss that car but it’s in good hands.

I drove a 1971 super beetle from 1983 to 1985. I miss that car. And I loved the luggage space up front. In college I took the spare tire out and left it at home. I filled the spare tire well with ice in beer and did stupid college stuff.

Had a 74 Super. Loved that car . Toured the USA in 75 in it. Put 75000 mi on in the 2.5 yrs I owned it. Ran great, handled great, never a problem .
Still have the walnut shifter knob with the Wolfsburg crest. That knob was used in a 71 bus and a 79 bus which I've owned for 41 years.
After 50 plus years and 3 cars that knob has gone over 325, 000 miles.

Least loved is a more accurate description than most hated

The 1971-1972 1302 is my favorite Beetle model. Especially the 1971. They have a little of everything. They have almost all of the advantages of the later cars, while they still have an almost flat window and smaller taillights. The 1971 even has the old steering wheel with the horn ring.

I learned to drive on a 1972 Super Beetle. I drove that car hard. I remember going to an out of town basketball game. I live in Montana. An out of town basketball was 342.6 (thank you Google) miles. This was the State Champion High School game. I remember a teacher asking me if I was the driver of a little red VW Beetle that passed her on the freeway. I remember that trip. On the freeway, that Super Beetle was traveling balls put with the speedometer needle straight down. It was pointing at the turn signal. Past the readings on the dial that stopped at 90 mph. This car, being a VW, handled the "use" like a champ.
