Ghostbusters Proton Stream - Practical Effects Test 001 -

My father and I attempted to replicate the proton pack wand's stream effect through practical props...no computer visual effects software was used to achieve what is seen on screen. While this was our first attempt and we already have some ideas on improving it; we'd like know you think in the comments section.

You could look into a string shooter, it just loops string around and around. Maybe you could adapt something close to that tech to work as your stream. That’s what I’ve been thinking on.

people are misunderstanding- this is just string. that’s why the tip of the wand isn’t on screen until the effect is needed. it’s a practical effect, not a real working device- in that regard, it’s a very good effect!

I think it looks pretty good, but I can't tell the length of the 'beams'. The longer you can make the 'beams', the better. I would make suggestions, but I honestly have no idea how you're generating the 'beams'. Are they EL wires / Car light strips/tubes (as someone else in the comment section suggested)?

If so, then the suggestion would be to see if you could modify the 'wand' and the hose with a sliding plate inside that would sit in the back of the 'wand' or the tube where it connects to the wand. The EL wires or tubing would be connected to (through) the plate, resting well inside of the 'wand' or hose. You would have to include a mechanism (switch, etc) to slide the plate from the tube/back of the wand to the front of the wand. If you're using an air blower to push the strings out of the tip of the 'wand', you'd have to allow some vent holes in (or around) the plate to allow the air to flow through (around) it. With this set up, you could have a longer 'beam' stored inside and pushed to the front when the 'beam' was 'activated'. When you were done, the mechanism would pull the wires/tubing back into the 'wand' or hose.

This would be preferable to just having the wires hanging out of the front of the 'wand', which would look a bit silly until you activated the device as you did in the video.
