Your oral health and #menopause

Menopause can affect your oral health.

The reduction of estrogen and progesterone during menopause and the years preceding can reduce the production of saliva in your mouth leading to a problem called dry mouth.

Without saliva, you may face higher risks for tooth decay and gum disease.

You may also experience burning mouth syndrome, a feeling of a burning mouth that may affect the tongue, gums, lips, inside of your cheeks, the roof of your mouth or
your whole mouth.

Loss of bone density due to lack of estrogen can also make it even more likely for you to experience tooth loss, and increase your risk of gum disease.

What can help?
* Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily.
* Regular dental exams and teeth cleaning
* Calcium-rich nutritious diet.
* Regular exercise ( believe it or not).

Studies have also shown that hormone replacement therapy has been shown to reduce the risk of gum disease and prevent tooth loss. The study, which evaluated nearly 500 women between the ages of 50 and 87, discovered rates of gum disease were significantly lower in those receiving HRT, with many seeing a 44% improvement in gum health.
