Volkswagen Polo could be the best first time drivers car

Volkswagen brought out the new Polo earlier this year and since then I've been asked about the best first-time drivers car so let's sit back and examine what makes a decent car for our precious kids to drive.

My first time drivers car was a 1975 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. It had plenty of boot space and headroom.
35L in town, 25 highway.
For that era of American car, it was not unusual.

20 grand. So this car will apply to maybe 5% of new drivers. New drivers usually have about 1 or 2 grand max for a first car so this car doesn't really apply for most in my opinion.

Great idea for a video series, we all needed to consider our first car at some stage. That 1.0 engine is perfect for a starter car and all you should need.

Knob control is very important in your first car.

Dear God, the pricing in Ireland is insane. Just looked the Polo up where I live and the CL trim for a more powerful 1.0 TSI engine is 16, 5 grand.

I’d say get one a couple of years old to begin with. My first car was a 2003 Peugeot 206. After the first year of high insurance, traded it for a Seat Ibiza 2012. Saved up a bit of cash too. Once my insurance premium went down.

PCP for a new car is advisable, But I’d advise to only take PCP. If you have a stable source of income. A wise tip is make sure to have enough for the balloon payment at the end. Or if you become more stable later on in the contract swap to HP and pay it off til owning.

For PCP finance, can you cancel the contract whenever and will you have to pay big amount for it?

I much prefer the outgoing polo to this one with the new side creases. If I was a kid, I'd be going for whatever the smallest engine is in the old one that you can get in 3 door and the sportier extiero trim

If insurance price is not limited I'd get a swift sport. Again not the new one, the last gen one. I quite like them swift sports.

Definitely not a small car anymore in terms of size, I personally would consider it instead of the Golf, does the same job for less money.

If you can afford 30k on a car id imagine the cost of insurance wouldn't matter

I'm 24 and I'm looking for my first car, but definitely not new. I can't afford 20k just for a car. I think I'll just buy a used R6 Polo instead and save myself about 70% cash.

A first time drivers car is ment to be "free motoring" as in the car owes you nothing wheras if you buy a brand new car your at a lose from the get go because of depreciation. I think most first time drivers have about 1000-3000 to spend on a car and make monthly payments to insurance companies.

Vw should offer bigger engines again a 1 litre is fine for new drivers but if your more mature that only wants a small runaround for a city or extra urban and weekend getaway your left with the gti only, the much delayed 1.5 tsi should have been available from launch and a 1.5 non plugin hybrid to match diesel ranges for low emission zones should be introduced sooner as well as a gte since you can’t get that in the golf in the U.K. anymore till the model change
