SpaceX Beats Lockheed for 1st Manned Spaceflight on 5/30/2020 | Why is Orion at Least a Year Behind?

Space Exploration Technologies Corp, or SpaceX, has been breaking down barriers in satellite launches, broadband LOE communications, and orbital freighters, defying skeptics. And now SpaceX is about to break the very last barrier—manned spaceflight. NASA has certified the Demo-2 Dragon 2 crew capsule for manned flight to the International Space Station. The tentative first launch has been scheduled for May 30th, 2020. Lockheed Martin’s Orion is at least another year away from certification. How did Lockheed, with all its advantages in political patronage, corporate size, experience in space, and money fall behind Musk’s scrappy startup? We take a look at why NASA chose to fund both commercial and federal manned space programs, the design differences between the Dragon 2 and Orion, and the competition issues that have been plaguing the U.S. space industry for decades.

SpaceX saved the space industry from itself

I'm a SpaceX fan, so i'm not very objective, however SpaceX gets things done, and is highly motivated. So, i'm sticking with the inovaters!

SpaceX CEO and management are all the best engineers. Boeing’s CEO was an accountant. Tells you all you need to know.

No, no, Not Bigelow!! I had great hopes for that! Maybe Elon might want to build a real spaces station, one that rotates and get together with Bigelow! The inflatable habitats have great potential!

I think the main difference is purpose. SpaceX's purpose is move humanity closer to be a space-faring civilisation. Boeing and Lockheed have priorities set on making money for it's investors and stockholders...the results show you how much of a difference the purpose makes

Wow, quite an achievement for SpaceX!

Boeing is the primary SLS contractor, not Lockheed... Orion is only built by Lockheed in conjunction with Airbus, almost the entire design process is done by NASA. Plus Orion and Dragon are on two completely separate playing fields, with two very different mission sets. Not one bit comparable. I believe you meant to say Boeing's Starliner was behind SpaceX's Dragon, as they are both direct competitors to each other.

I was an IT contractor for nearly 20 years with the Fed Government. It's not about accomplishing anything, it's about preserving the bureaucracy. 4 year delay on a project because the admin was too busy. 1-1/2 year delay on another, same excuse. When the 2nd project was handed to a newer Fed admin, it was approved in 3 weeks and implemented in 1 week. The 4 year project handed to a newer admin, approved in 1 month and implemented in less than 2 days. Get your GS rating and step increases, wait your 30 and retire. That's the theme. To the biggies like Boeing and Lockheed, welcome delays and change requests, then the money just keeps coming. At least 20% of all Fed contracts are wasted money and I'm being generous. Commercial will be the only success. I'd say Bigelow has the in with creating the next space station. If Musk or someone else comes up with the money we could have an Earth Moon Lagrange point rotating space station inside 10 years. NASA, they won't land on the Moon by 2025 as dreamed, unless it's using gear they have no part in designing or fabricating.

What we are witnessing is the difference between execution of a vision, vs make the stockholders happy.

Boeing is always looking for more funding, but they haven't even flown a successful flight abort test while SpaceX has astronauts on the way to the space station as I type this. What an embarrassment.

not to put to fine a point on it, of the big guys, how much of the "lost" money, how much went to R&D, how much went to bonus checks for upper echelons management bonus checks

Too many full screen ads that destroy the continuity of the program.

I worked on the Apollo program and paid for a new house in one year by working over two thousand overtime hours basically doing nothing but sitting in a clean room all night by myself. I found out years later that NASA was paying my subcontractor three times what I was paid for each hour worked; many of those hours at double and triple time. What a scam!

Have to admit SpaceX is kicking ass. Better hope Elon isn't interested in Defense development.

Because Lockheed has twenty layers of suits and shareholders, whereas SpaceX doesn't.
