It took me a few months to step up to the use of a "Man Bag " but if your primary source of transportation is a motorcycle there is no real way to carry your crap. You have a car so leaving your Crap in the car is easy, but for some of us we carry a wallet. Big ass cell phone, always a lot of coins.. toilet paper. Never get cause without your toilet paper. sun glasses. When we go pay the bills you have to carry them...its a Filipino glove box to some..if you start jamming crap in your pockets your going to get pick-pocketed .... A bag helps keep it close to you.

I felt much more comfortable with a nice looking Tech sling bag in the Philippines than I do in US but I do sometimes use here. It's handy to keep passport, wallet with pesos, phone and maybe a wallet with credit card and us dollars..safer feeling too.

A simple fannypack that goes around your waist is useful for money, keys, and phone. :)

I’ve used a sling bag on occasion when I was in the Philippines pre COVID. It’s handy place to store you’re hand sanitizer, wet wipes, tissue, you should be aware of the flimsy napkins that disintegrate common in local restaurants and if you have to go the the men’s room (CR local term) where sometimes TP is non existent. So, yes it is pretty practical to have especially if you have to take public transportation, and if you go somewhere farther than your local metro area. I also carry a multi tool, flashlight and other EDC items along with the above. When in the Philippines you always have to be prepared for any contingencies.

The Fanny Pack was popular with middle aged tourist that they had around their waist and it was a small pouch you kept in front just under your belly, also popular with vendors, it started to look a bit silly and younger men started to wear it over across their shoulder and had the pouch at the chest area. Over time the re introduction of the square/rectangular long strapped Man Bag took over, the original name is Messenger Bag from the 50s, I always use the messenger bag for travel as it can comfortably hold money wallet passport travel documents as well as mini toiletries and reading book.

It's more comfortable, convenient and safe to put the cellphone, wallets, keys inside the sling bags now. Before the cellphones, Filipino men don't usually use bags. They put there wallet in the back pocket of their pants, they hang their keys on the front of their jeans, where the belt is. With the cellphone now, putting it on the other back pocket is too much for the Filipino men. It could also destroy the phone or it can be stolen. Filipino men are not used to wearing cargo shorts or pants, Americans does. That's why Filipino men use sling or belt bags while Americans use cargo shorts or pants for their "things". 😁

It's called a sling pack. I have two of them. They are good for when you are traveling and are in crowds. You keep the pockets facing forward, never on your back. It has everything to do with pickpockets. When in the philippines I will never ever carry valuables in my back pockets.

So I bought one. It makes carrying things that would normally be in my pockets easier. When I'm on the bike nothing falls out of my pockets and it is easy to access. If I'm walking I do not need to worry about pick pockets either.

I find them useful.

Google "Postman Bag" or "Messenger Bag" for some "manly" man purse designs lol.

I have a sling bag where I put my keys, iPhone, sanitizer, charger, headphone, wallet and some bath tissues. It is easier to protect my valuables against pick pockets. :) very organized and functional.

I think it's got to do with pickpocketers. The sling bag you can put it in the front so you can see the person in front of you. Loss and prevention technique.
Thank you guys.

Men use it nowadays probably because back in the days thieves or pickpockets used razor blades to slash your back pockets to steal your wallet and sometimes even slicing your front pockets especially in a crowded trains, buses or markets. And now you’ll see that even if they’re carrying man bags it’s usually in front of their bodies. That’s my 2 cents. Take care

My dad had a man bag in the 70s and 80s. It didn't have a strap though he just cared it in his hand. He had a checkbook in there, before debit, cigarettes, wallet, cash, etc. Is was small like the size of an average size bible. But now a days in the US I don't see men with those.

I have a Pacsafe bag that I used when I was in Cebu. I liked it. You can keep everything in one place. Plus it was advertised for pick pockets. The one I have is good against someone trying to use a knife to cut it. Also good against people trying to scan your credit cards.

I know many times at the street food security check points they told me to not leave phone on hip because of snatchers. I think it's multiple reasons but the easiest way to hold everything secure. But in USA we don't because of manly mentality... remember the 90s hip bag...
