Video slide show of my latest project car which I recently sold. This is a 1996 Volvo 850 turbo. I had a request of what my car looked like, so I decided to do this before and after comparison. The car was originally going to be scraped by the local Volvo dealer as the car wouldn't stay running.

Total work done to the car along with applicable tutorial videos:
-rebuilt alternator
-battery
-HVAC blower motor
-power stage unit
-camshaft position sensor
-fuel filter
-air filter
-spark plugs
-spark plug wires
-both headlight wipers and wiper arms
-exhaust tailpipe along with polished stainless steel tip
-power antenna mast
-recharged ac system
-rear bumper brackets
-color matched mirrors
-minor rust repair
-plastic soldered bumpers
-repainted all rubber/plastic trim
-detailed entire car

For the bumper and trim, I used 2 stage automotive paint which was and Audi color, Lava Grey Metallic. I wet sanded the bumpers to remove a majority of the textured surface, then applied filler primer and sanded again until it was smooth. Applied the base coat of color, then clear coat, and once fully hardened wet sanded and polished.

As for the mirrors, the clear was pealing badly so they got wet sanded down with 320 until smooth, then filler primer, wet sanded with 400, and 2 stage paint was also used here too. So first was base and then clear. I didn't have to wet sand to polish these because they turned out perfect with no over spray. This was all done with spray bomb cans. I'm hoping to do a painting tutorial in the future, hopefully the weather will hold up for one.

Looks great. I had the 1995 version, same color, HPT. Very fun car and pretty easy to work on. I miss it. I have a 2005 V70 2.5T now, and a 1998 S70 HPT. I liked the 95 the best - maybe because it was the first.

If you're just looking to repaint then with a matte finish bumper paint, then Duplicolor has a great product and I do have a tutorial for that which was just uploaded recently. Check it out on my channel. With the Volvo bumpers being textured, instead of sandpaper just use abrasive pads to scuff the surface and then paint. There isn't any need for primer if you aren't repairing damaged areas. Sorry about the multiple replies, I keep hitting maximum character counts for messages.

What did you use for a bumper/trim paint? I have a gunmetal 850 and the trim is badly faded. Also, a good DIY video would show how you prepped and painted your mirror

Very old vid now I know, but how do you remove the fender trim piece? I know the door trim pieces have a torx screw and then just slide, but cant find info on the fender peice.
