I love these obscure cultural tidbit videos. I doubt I can guess what the next one will be about but that makes it extra fun.

Wow, I watched Looney Tunes for years, and only just now realized that Marvin from Mars was wearing Roman garb.

worth mentioning the Greek equivalent "Ares" was vey different. He was a much more sinister figure associated more with the death and destruction of war. Greeks would be more concerned with not running into Ares on the battle field than praying to him.

The month of March being named after Mars becomes extra-significant when you realize that, at the time the month was named, March was the first month of the year. It wasn't until much later that January and February were put before it on the calendar.

Also in French (and I'm guessing other latin languages) the word for Tuesday also derives from Mars: Mardi.

Fun Fact about Marvin the Martian:

He's actually the mascot of the Spirit Exploratory Mars Rover being displayed on its flight patch. Daffy Duck playing his nemesis Duck Dodgers is the mascot of Spirits sister rover Opportunity.

Bringing thinks full circle in a way.

Tuesday is also considered the day of Mars, but this is more apparent in Spanish (and other Latin languages I'm sure) where Tuesday is Martes

The romans also named a whole day of the week (Tuesday) after Mars, and this is the name still used for Tuesday in most Romance languages (Mardi in French, Martes in Spanish, etc)

Fun fact the doors of the temple of Mars wich you showed in the video used to be kept open during time of war as a sign of good luck and during the first part of roman history the were only closed once

Also of note that the Romance languages tend to have "Mars" as the namesake for what in English is Tuesday ("Tyr's Day", who the Romans equivocated with Mars). The standard example is the French "Mardi"

The story of Romulus and Remus is extremely cool. They essentially turned what is now Italy from a big disjointed wild area full of criminals and bachelors into a village, then a city

That was an unexpectedly large and wide-ranging amount of human culture packed into 50 seconds. Good pub quiz material - how to link Roman mythology, Looney Tunes and chocolate bars together

The Soviet Union also named their Rzhev Offensive Operation Mars, as did Naoko Takeuchi for one of her characters. And a Dr Who character too.
