Thats good i think to separate "sorcerer supreme" title from strange in the movie. He is mostly absent for a long time like snap, traping on mirror dimention by peter, MoM, and now maybe dark dimention (dormamu). He can't get title "sorcerer supreme" when he is not in earth to lead the taj. And wong is always on earth leading the taj from every movie and series

The ancient one extended her life simply because there was no one suitable to take over for her giving the title to doctor. Strange now doctor Strange is the only candidate with the potential to reach a prime ancient one. If not, surpass it. The primary duty of the sorcerer supreme is to protect the Earth which requires a s*** ton of power. Wong does not have this power meaning as the sorceress supreme he's only able to do the secondary duties which are to train disciples and organise the sorcerer organisation. Something he's probably better at than doctor. Strange, but as we see doctor, Strange is actually the one performing the primary duty of the sorcerer supreme and points out that his only sorcerer supreme on technicality because he was gone for 5 years even at the end of the movie doctor. Strange is the one to be going into the dark dimension to solve a problem further, prove that Wong simply cannot handle the primary duty, and despite having the title of a sorcer at supreme, he's unable to perform the duties of a sorcerer's supreme. Even he himself acknowledges this several times and acknowledges the fact that he can't stop doctor Strange and doesn't even try
